With our Texan-Dutch kids on Texel we could of course not resist the opportunity to go 'shrimpin' - Shrimp fishing on one of the chartered fishing vessels taking tourist out on to the Waddenzee in Texel every day. We opted for a day Opa Kees was with us as we decided on a trip like this we needed a 1:1 ratio for kids vs grown-ups.
So we made our way out to the Oudeschild harbor for a kibbeling (fish) lunch first. Kaat did not want to eat much as she was too busy checking out the fishing boats. The most famous Dutch Kaat is a lady nicknamed 'Kaat Mossel' who in had a major career as a fish inspector in the Rotterdam area between 1723 and 1784 (she was also a big supporter of William of Orange). Our Kaat appears to have some affiliation to the same.
To be allowed to take 2 toddlers and a baby and have max safety in terms of siding etc we went for the bigger and uglier TX10, also called 'Emmie'.
Pirate Duuk thought it was all magnificent! (yes he is covered in very white sticky sunscreen against the ever present (when we are around) surprisingly strong Dutch sun)
And having conquered a place high up with good views and good weather we where also happy & good to go.
The Waddenzee and the Wadden Isles are one of my favorite places in the world and as soon as I reach these places I can relax and smile......sooo nice!
As a Gulf coast Texan Rick fitted right in with his Dutch sea legs and Texan boots. Somehow they knew he was coming and had a US flag as well as a pirate fag up well before we even boarded.
So yes Rick also was very very happy.
It was great to take our not so Dutch Dutch kids on a very very Dutch outing.
Once we had caught some fish Rick was done in for. Done as in he needed no further entertainment or attention.....with his broken shoulder safely tucked in he watched, and watched, and watched.
But the best entertainment for us was Ms Kaat who did her name more then justice. Whilst everyone wore jackets and shirts Kaat spend the full 2.5 hours walking around in just a summer dress & bare feet. Once the catch was in we found she definitely also ad the natural instinct to inspect it all.
Kaat never got cold or lost interest in the fish, the view and the wind. Rick was less keen on inspecting the fish that up close & personal and was happy to venture up for some last adventure with Opa Kees.
What a great trip!
