1 Week already?

So no complaints yet about the 3rd kid not getting the same 'focus' when it comes to pictures right? We already have more pictures of Duuk in the womb (simply as he always failed to be 'awake' at every first session and hence we did them almost all twice), and next week he will undergo a photo shoot as there is a lady friend here who wants to start up a private business in baby photography and so she needs 'test subjects'. In the meantime we are holding up our end of the stick.....
I just wish there was a way to conserve for real that special feeling of the first few days or weeks. So small, the special smell, the new-ness of it all, a baby still in womb-size, still somewhat 'curled up' the way he was in there.
He is a week old tonight already - so fast! Too fast!
He is clearly sometimes still processing it all - dreaming and throwing out an odd tiny squeal in the midst of his sleep every once in a while. Look at that frown.
And here with Ms Chandramma who like us also cannot get enough of him (and our other 2 kids). Glad he appears so comfy with her as once I go back to work he will spend half his days with her.

Life as Fife

So it is starting to sink in - we are a family of 5 now. And so happy together and lucky to have such a precious beautiful family. A beautiful, happy, healthy new baby who does everything he needs to do.
Kaatje is still very happy and appears delighted my belly is gone such that there is more space in my lap again!
Rick is happy with his play room and so is dad? (yes we washed that window now)
and then the fun of sharing it all with the Indian version of 'beschuit met muisjes' - Eelco took to work today.
Yes mom and baby are trying to get some rest too.
and Rick & Kaat started teaching Duuk
Who is trying to keep up, brave little boy!

Duuk's first weekend

Mom & Duuk are very lazy and tired but also very happy with each other and some nice family relaxing time at home.
Lots and lots of time to cuddle and admire our gorgeous son (although Rick would claim I would need to use the word handsome here).
He clearly still has a little trouble focussing but at times he's quite busy trying to look around and hold up his head.
Some looks are clearly more intelligent then others - but all are cute -:)
A more philosophical pose:
We had our first real 'kraambezoek' and hence our first square version of 'beschuit met muisjes'.
Rick & Kaat adore Duuk and are totally fine with sharing us and our house and life now with them. But there is only so much you can do with a baby - so time for some 'big kid' entertainment and attention from papa.
Kaat did try to convince me to get in the pool too but a little too soon for that!
as we checked out 'early' Duuk had to go out with us this morning - back to the hospital for the last few newborn blood tests. He appears to be ok with the car seat and the driving (or sitting in traffic) and the bumpy Bangalore roads.

Duuk Poppe

He's here! Our son & little brother made an appearance into the world on Wednesday February 20th at 10:48pm in the CloudNine hospital in Bangalore India. He is handsome, healthy and happy and so are we! Especially me that he is out and it is time to start relaxing & enjoying.
Due to the swift delivery of the other two with little warning signs till full dilation I was very worried about being 'on time' in the hospital and where and what to do with the other kids when we would reach 'that point'. So when we visited the dr on Feb 8th and they could see contractions on the scan and that the baby had moved down completely and they told us 3-4 more days we where relieved to have some clarity and a clear timeframe but worried too as not quite ready & prepared. When after that we had some false alarms and nothing progressed for another 10 days I was starting to go nuts! Then a strike was announced in all of India for 2 days - this so called Bandh - means that mainly all transport shuts down and many public services, but also that public unrest is expected or riots and so that schools close as a safety measure and people stay at home. So on Tuesday at 2pm we got an e-mail that school would be closed for 2 days, with no baby here yet and me on edge and a new nanny since 1 day who would have no bus transport to come to work etc in a city that is not considered 'safe' to venture into during strike hours......sigh!

Wednesday afternoon was time for a check up and so we showed up late afternoon. Finally the good news - progression - 4 cm....but kind off not enough to stay maybe? Considering the strike traffic outside was non existant so we opted to go home and hope I would last the night (w the kids at home) and then come back the next day. Well bad plan it turned out. Within 30 min of being home I did start to have notable contractions every 10 - 15 min! I would never last the night. So we ate some with the kids, got them settled with some friendly neighbors for the night and headed back to the hospital.

By 8pm we made it there and I put on a brave face and got ready but was super super nervous......
Passing our time a little in between paperwork & preps with some last belly shots
Not long after I was in full back labor with no relief for 2.5 hrs - or so it felt. Rumor has it the 3rd is faster then the previous ones,.......well this one appeared on strike too - or have accepted the Bandh advise: stay inside! By then I was ready to give up when somewhere I detected a voice from the Dr saying that I should just try to see if I could 'just push it out' despite him not being quite there - so I did I guess and all of the sudden - it was done! And little Duuk and I first laid eyes on each other.
Eelco had been even busier helping me through this time then with the other two and was just super happy and proud. The staff was clearly very impressed with the experienced and engaged dad!
Duuk, Eelco and I all had a very very short night in the recovery room after. Happy, dazed and feeling a little unreal and sleepy.
In the morning Eelco picked up big brother Rick and big sister Kaat who had had a great sleep over and where over the moon to meet the baby.
They are both very very sweet for their brother and try to be careful. He gets lots of kisses and touches. Rick wants to really call him Janko but knows it us Duuk. Kaat calls him baby Duck -:)
With the hospital being ok but not quite our thing in many ways we asked the drs if they could let us go home the same day. So the kids went back home to spend the afternoon with the nanny whilst we sat through check-ups, vaccinations and paperwork (with mainly lots of questions about our marriage and our relationship, name of the baby was optional to fill out,.....'if known at this stage' -;)

And so not even 18 hrs after Duuk was born we were ready to leave the hospital.
They dressed up the car for us as well. Which actually made me feel safer as with the strike still on I assumed they would leave us alone with a new baby onboard!
The kids were super happy to have us home again, Duuk is happy at home and likes his crib and we had some colleagues from the office swing by already with cards and flowers.

Our 'squirrel' days have started - that is what Eelco and I have dubbed the phase right after we have had a baby. We just cocoon at the house and only go out for brief 'hauls' to get groceries or a few other things and bring that back to the house again - to enjoy each other. As a family of five now! We feel super rich with 3 such precious kids.

Trash or treasures?

One of the things that proves very very difficult in our new life is throwing out our trash. Really? Yes really. We completely understand and understood that there are things we would throw out in countries like the US or the Netherlands that here can have a very happy second life with someone else.

However after unpacking 380 boxes it is kind of normal that one is left with some broken or damaged items or incomplete sets of something. So with the last boxes or our regular trash bags we have thrown out a few things such as very bend plastic clothes hangers, a torn bag, a pack of dried out rubber door seal strips or an incomplete moulded cardboard kids game. WRONG! Every time we put out trash someone goes through it all it appears with a tooth comb - yes they go through even super size boxes stuffed with packing paper and leaking old bug traps etc. And anything not deemed real trash is put next to the bin and left there or like today even returned to the house personally by security! We don't want it, nobody else is allowed to take it without us writing an approval note that it can go out of the gate and we don't even have to try to put it back in the trash some other day.

We are not bad people and understand the concept of recycling and ones person's trash being another persons treasures - we have 3 boxes of items of no value to us sitting ready to be given away (just have not managed to get all the 'approval notes' done -;) but we should be free to decide something is really trash and put it in the bin without being chastised for it every time or have what we consider trash sitting next to our front door for days as the trash collection refuses to take it right? I am now afraid to purge my underwear drawer as you can imagine!

There is one solution - very simple. By now if I really want something to go without interference, the disposal gets combined with the content of our dirty diaper bin.......so far apart from the wild street dogs nobody has taken an interest in any trash (bags) we put out with some lovely full diapers in them.....-:) Guess we need to keep at least one kid in diapers for our full term here.

Hiring Female Home Help

So - everyone said when we moved to India - Oh fabulous - in Asia help is easy to come by so that will work out great for you with almost 3 little ones and 2 jobs.......well....redefine easy I would say.

First of all we found out very quickly that finding the right maid or nanny or cook or whatever other female help at home you want to hire is not that easy as it is the No 1 thing people complained to us about. In many places in SE Asia and the Middle East, especially the typical expat locations, there is an abundance of ladies who live away from home - with one purpose - to make as much money as possible as fast as possible - and hence these ladies want a job as many hours as possible and you tend to get 1 person doing the whole range of household chores including child care and often living with you or working at least only for you.

The labor force for these jobs here in India is quite different. Almost all these ladies look after their own family and that is of course priority #1 - not so strange of course in most societies. Meaning they don't want to work extended hours and preferably want to start after the morning school run and finish before dinner time. As these are also for us peak traffic hours that is exactly when we want help the most. Because many of these ladies only work part time there is also much more segregation in jobs and work so different ladies are available as Nanny, Cook, Sitter etc and as you can imagine it is hardest to come by someone who 'just cleans' and the more senior nanny's refuse to clean often.

The communities where we live are in a side of town that has limited 'normal' living areas and so many of the ladies need to take a 30 min bus ride at least to come to work, which can easily be longer. This means they can be late regularly, or suffer from transport strikes or can't stay late as it is not safe enough for them to go home late or their husbands don't allow them to stay beyond hours - even if you offer to take them home in your car. There are also plenty of ladies who's agenda is managed by their family and husband so even if they want to be loyal to you - if they get told to stay at home or something happens in the family - you likely get a no-show - and if you are lucky a call an hour before. Planning ahead is not the most normal thing here.

Finding a nanny or maid goes through referrals and they have reference letters which you then do need to check upon, some letters many years old with no longer functioning phone numbers or e-mail addresses. The letters can be very nice but only if you follow up do you find that actually someone is a really really nice cook and nice lady but otherwise not that much use for housework, or that someone is really good, but has a very strict husband and hence can really never stay extra or longer or was not that great but mainly maintained because she needed the job badly.

Then there are also plenty of ladies who have been accused of stealing, and that accusation appears to be made either very quickly or stealing (of the silliest things) by personnel is really really prevalent. Other maids terrorize the less experienced maids they work with, cannot work with your driver, cannot be left alone etc etc and then there tends to be the issue of clashing personalities and or cleanliness standards with the lady of the house which also means there are usually 3-4 ladies going through the household in the first few months after arriving here.

Based on our 1st drivers advise and referral, which was backed up, we decided to hire a nanny who has done recently three 3-4 year cycles with families and hence was / is experienced and appeared to be steady and reliable. Unfortunately she was not available till her 'current family' left meaning we had to wait till early Feb and bridge January somehow. We managed ourselves somewhat and hired a temporary lady for the afternoons, who worked accros the street and potentially was stealing there, was a poor cleaner and on the phone a lot - but she was ok with the kids - which was the main thing and there and available and a known face to other moms (some social control!). Considering the bad reputation especially Eelco was quite uncomfortable with her, our driver also told us every day what was all wrong with her and Rick could not stand her and stopped listening to her completely (and she was no walk over!) - so she never finished the 3 weeks we hired her for.

Then we hired fortunately at least the 2nd help / maid we where going to get anyway - a very nice lady, who speaks barely any English, but who lives 10 min walking from here, wants to really work (she is not with her family on weekdays) and works part time hours in the afternoon in at least 3 other houses on the compound where she is all adored & well respected. She is doing the morning hours for us with the kids before school starts - so we can get to work in time - and then cleans the house. The nanny we will get will probably do very limited cleaning so at least we have one who will do some. Chandramma, as she is called, is working out fantastically with the kids and she is working hard and reliable. The only problem is that I do not really get explained to her very well or only slowly what I do and do not want from a kids or cleaning perspective meaning Kaat was playing with everything I had just washed & prepped for the baby or that she washed all my nice dresses too hot, with the brooches etc still on. But at least she is not work shy, the kids both love her, and that particularly with Rick is a feat these days with new faces, and she has helped us out a few afternoons as well whilst we where awaiting the nanny's start date. She learns fast enough if I get someone to translate or show her with hands and feet and she is trustworthy. At least half the battle sort of done.

Then it was time for the 'nanny' to start (as this is the person who will care FT for the baby we need someone with good English we can communicate with and who can sort things in case of emergencies) and we called to confirm that day to make sure she would show only to find out that she could not come and would not come all week - family emergency.......WHAT? That was the week Eelco was traveling and I had a big week at work as well - home alone over 8 months pregnant with the 2 other ones. We checked back with the references etc and this appeared not normal behavior for her. In that week she or her family decided that she was the one to stay at home and look after a father or father in law who had had a stroke and hence she would not come and work at all we found after a week. True or not - we where back at square one.

Plenty of names are put forward at such a point then, but many are temporary solutions or come with a lot of 'buts'. Amongst others we interviewed the nanny who was just becoming available and had worked with our driver in the same household for 3 years and she appeared to be ok. By now I no longer get too excited. I am pretty sure she will be ok with the kids and the baby - will see how we will 'gel' and how we will fare with her in combination with the other maid and some other duties she will also have to undertake. She is starting tomorrow and we have called - 3 times - to confirm......

Maybe, maybe we are sort of organized now - all we now have to do is figure out how much of the paranoia around stealing etc we believe in and to what extend to lock things up in the house and make our own life more difficult.....and agree her routine with her....and hope the kids will accept her.

Some days I really miss the access to the day care 45 - 50 hrs a week in Houston, and the access to a professional cleaning service for the house. 'Help' I guess is a relative term.....being a 'madam' and running my household here proves easily a full time job!

Unexpected fab afternoon

After an elaborate doctor's visit this morning, in which we established baby #3 is playing tricks on me and quite happy to stay in my belly a little longer I opted to skip the office the rest of the day and have the baby dictate my sleep rhythm by doing a big afternoon nap (only time he is not partying much) and then taking the kids to a Birthday party after school at some new friends house in the big & kids filled Prestige Ozone compound.

Rick and Kaat where ABSOLUTELY delighted as they had a fantastic inflatable structure there, that despite some worried looks from other moms and nannies Kaat decided she was also most definitely big enough for. Super happy kids and so a happy mom too - how could I not be after such big giggles & grins!

On top of that there was a Dinosaur Train cake that Rick talked about for a long time and Kaat wanted two pieces off and lots of other kids and moms to meet for me.

The Artist

Rick keeps on attending his Sunday Art Class with good enthusiasm, very nice output and major stories afterwards. The lady who runs the class sends us some pictures of every session.

Bangalore Brunch

We discovered soon enough here that sunday brunch is kind of the thing to do. Energy levels around here on the subject went up even higher with the Windmill-ers (our neighbors) when it turned out that the new Marriott down the road is nearly ready for its official opening and that it was having a 'trial run' brunch last sunday.

So with about 1/3 of the villa residents we made our way to the hotel. All in our cars, a whopping 1 km drive with upon arrival a full security check of the car (bonnet, booth & mirror underneath) and full personal security screening at the front door that trip took as log as if we would have walked it. But hey, no nuisance from the street dogs in the car -;)

In different combinations we recognized many of our neighbors being there and met a few more. For the kids full blown entertainment was put on in the form of a bouncy castle, entertainment staff, a balloon man, face painter, arts & craft teacher etc. Rick LOVED everything they put out 'for his party' and wanted to stay forever and ever! Maybe also really because of all the 'big boys' present for him to follow around.
Kaat is also clearly very good at brunching.
and eating copious amounts of pizza like a pro.
For Eelco the brunches are not so good as he cannot avoid needing to try EVERYTHING, but it does make him very very happy. For the adults there was plenty to enjoy in the food arena with a full on cheese & (cold) meat section, extensive salads and salad bar, Indian ready made food, Indian food cooked on demand, 3 special other hot continental dishes cooked on demand, an indoor and an outdoor BBQ, a wood fired pizza oven producing non stop, a sushi bar and even then the opportunity to order 'something else' for your kids in case they where picky eaters. The dessert buffet was about half the size of the main buffet and unlimited supplies of candy appeared to be added to it at regular intervals.
We spend a good 3.5 hrs there and the kids never got bored, the adults could socialize loads and Kaat kept coming back for more pizza.
A very hard life we have -;) and with Eelco back in the country and the baby stuff a lot more organized then before the weekend I was also actually able to sit back & relax and enjoy.
and then the price tag? Also very reasonable, little kids free, and a flat $30 per adult without alcohol and $40 with - I only could have one glass of course but it was sooooo nice! Hopefully this was a success for the hotel as well and we will be back here on a Sunday in a couple of weeks.
