Bangalore Brunch

We discovered soon enough here that sunday brunch is kind of the thing to do. Energy levels around here on the subject went up even higher with the Windmill-ers (our neighbors) when it turned out that the new Marriott down the road is nearly ready for its official opening and that it was having a 'trial run' brunch last sunday.

So with about 1/3 of the villa residents we made our way to the hotel. All in our cars, a whopping 1 km drive with upon arrival a full security check of the car (bonnet, booth & mirror underneath) and full personal security screening at the front door that trip took as log as if we would have walked it. But hey, no nuisance from the street dogs in the car -;)

In different combinations we recognized many of our neighbors being there and met a few more. For the kids full blown entertainment was put on in the form of a bouncy castle, entertainment staff, a balloon man, face painter, arts & craft teacher etc. Rick LOVED everything they put out 'for his party' and wanted to stay forever and ever! Maybe also really because of all the 'big boys' present for him to follow around.
Kaat is also clearly very good at brunching.
and eating copious amounts of pizza like a pro.
For Eelco the brunches are not so good as he cannot avoid needing to try EVERYTHING, but it does make him very very happy. For the adults there was plenty to enjoy in the food arena with a full on cheese & (cold) meat section, extensive salads and salad bar, Indian ready made food, Indian food cooked on demand, 3 special other hot continental dishes cooked on demand, an indoor and an outdoor BBQ, a wood fired pizza oven producing non stop, a sushi bar and even then the opportunity to order 'something else' for your kids in case they where picky eaters. The dessert buffet was about half the size of the main buffet and unlimited supplies of candy appeared to be added to it at regular intervals.
We spend a good 3.5 hrs there and the kids never got bored, the adults could socialize loads and Kaat kept coming back for more pizza.
A very hard life we have -;) and with Eelco back in the country and the baby stuff a lot more organized then before the weekend I was also actually able to sit back & relax and enjoy.
and then the price tag? Also very reasonable, little kids free, and a flat $30 per adult without alcohol and $40 with - I only could have one glass of course but it was sooooo nice! Hopefully this was a success for the hotel as well and we will be back here on a Sunday in a couple of weeks.

Beautiful little people

Esperanza Reunion in BLR

One of Rick's classmates from Esperanza in Houston was here in Bangalore. Her father's family is from here and so on their bi-annual trip home they took time out of their manic schedule to come and pay us a brief visit. Rick was happily surprised, and for Keshav (the dad) it must have been somewhat weird to now not only accommodate all his own friends and family on his brief trip home, but also his daughters' friends. Little Laya, like Rick is very much American and been here only once or twice before. Now she has her own address to visit when in town!

Murder on the grounds

Since a few days we made it onto the Windmills forum, meaning we get to see what all our neighbors and fellow 'Windmillers' are talking about and staying up to speed with what happens on the grounds. In IT city, it turns out, many of the Indian's living mainly in the big apartment complex also part of the grounds have lots to write about.

One of the ongoing discussions appeared to be about theft by personnel and how the WM (Windmills) security and communication on the forum should help withe these issues with maids, drivers and cooks. Security was mentioned a lot and then messages started to appear about an incident and how it was bad we had not been properly informed yet.

By the end of the morning the maintenance foreman (who probably is the better English speaker in the group) was making the rounds to invite all tenants and owners to a meeting about 'the security situation' later this afternoon. Kind of oblivious I said with Kaat on my arm - thanks for invite; yeah I heard something about an incident, what was that about. Then the guy said "someone was murdered in his apartment Friday"........what?!?!?!

Then after seeing more notices on the forum, hearing the feedback from the meeting (we could not go) and the newspaper articles about it the story is not very clear nor comfortable. The guy was quite well known to many here, also in the Villa's and was sort of an expat here with German family. There are 2 security guards who are suspected to have played a role in all this although others suggest that there may be a bigger story there and the 2 'missing' security guards may merely have come after the fact and taken some valuables and are now the easiest way for the police to be seen doing something quickly and pinning it all on them. Lots of emotions, speculation & gossip. AND lots of new measures and arrangements for all of us.

Little bizarre all. Don't really think at all we are under threat or could be next, but nevertheless it does not make us sleep any better either!

Our first social life at home

We stayed in the hotel at the club at the most famous of Bangalore's gated communities frequented by Expats. In our time there we had hoped to start meeting people but actually found little connection with the people we ran into there, some of which even daily. We only actually had some real conversations and phone number exchanges with 2 British couples with kids who actually where both also just on in the compound 'in transit'. Though not staying in the hotel both where in the process of moving to other communities for a better quality of living......

So considering we need to make new friends here and it had been a month since we has seen them all we figured we better get a move on and invited them over. Despite the fact that they all did not know each other either it was a very successful afternoon. The kids all got along great, we had a good time, and we got to try out the entertainment capabilities of our house. One of the families has a girl Kaatje's age, who also is in the parallel class at her school. The other family has 2 boys, 1 Rick's age and one a little younger then Kaat.
Happy chaos.
Our two little sharks - quoting 'finding nemo' whilst wobbling up the stairs in their Shark towels.
We tested our pool, the nice gas BBQ we bought from a German next door leaving (who clearly maintained it like his Mercedes - in super condition!) and our huge table and new play room setting. Rick & Kaat where clearly delighted by the to them recognizable situation: a house full of people. Rick told me "we are having a great time!" - I think we should bring even more friends next time.

No replacement by any means of the friends we are missing from elsewhere but we made a start! Saturday we also had a first Birthday party here at Windmills, and I have been invited to a ladies only evening event next week, some mom meetings (so far during the day) and Kaat also scored her first Birthday party invite. Not a bad score after < 2 months.

Kitchen DIY

Before we moved I had bought the kids a kitchen for here. So yesterday morning, when our planned date with Rick's Houstonian class mate (with a Bangalore native father) fell through we decided that should be enough spare hours to put it together. Manju, our driver, who had showed early, was also eager to help and so where Rick & Kaat of course. Bliss for me as I had at least 90 min undisturbed 'me' time.
Plenty of pieces and Kaat ran off with all the handle bars.
Eelco said Manju has two left hands when it comes to DIY but makes up for it in enthusiasm! Rick was the most serious of all.
And so in the few hours we have been 'home alone' this weekend the kids have been cooking. Somehow the whole bag with play food items went missing so there are lots of tools, lots of cups & plates etc.......and french fries to cook. Guess what we have been served?!

Moving in our stuff

Our Seafreight had finally arrived in Chennai on January 19th. Exactly 2 months after the packers came to our house in Houston. We had heard a range of 'horror' stories so although I really really really wanted our things I also knew I could still have to wait 3 - 4 weeks. Fortunately 6 days later we received confirmation the container had at least made it to Bangalore. With a few different holidays on a row last weekend, officials just honor any and all of them, the earliest Eelco could go to the customs office to clear our belongings was Monday. Again the stories ranged from being in & out in an hour, never seeing your things an djust identifying yourself and showing yoru face to an official,  to spending the whole day there which they painstakingly unload every item in your freight, none to gentle either, and make comments about the content and how much duty they can charge over this that and the other.

No reason how your luck is determined but Eelco was in the first category and kind of surprised showed up back in the office in 1 hr. We where not quite sure whether this was it all or what would happen next but they had dismissed him.

By Tuesday late PM we received an e-mail confirming the already negotiated and finalized duty amount to be paid (also somewhat random it appears) meaning that by Wednesday we could be seeing our things.

In a mad rush we arranged for the rental furniture to be picked up and cleared our work calendars. By Wednesday 2 pm I was ready at the house, waiting with eager anticipation! The rental furniture folks where there on the dot, so within 20 min I had nothing left to sit on but a kids chair or a folding stool and the stone floors. By 3 pm no container, no boxes, but a hyped up Rick arrived home from school ready for the box party I promised him. By 4 pm nothing, by 5 pm an inkling that the customs man had arrived late and that they where still busy overloading our freight in 4 smaller trucks. All trucks could only leave the customs area at the same time.

By 5.10 PM FINALLY a half laden truck arrived with 7 guys and they hung around for what appeared to be forever - discussing in detail proceedings with security, the maintenance crew who happened to linger around and the guys from the rental furniture company who where still wrapping & packing their items (they had moved them outside in 20 min and then took 3.5 hrs to pack it all there!). Of course nobody talked to me - with 'sir' (that would be Eelco) - not being home and I by then was out of my mind!

By 5:30 they finally started moving. The manager had to sign of every box and I had to indicate for every box on average 1.5 times where it had to go - and still 25% at least did not end up where I asked them to.

That whilst watching the kids who really wanted to go into the pool and play with me was more then a day job also as I had been lingering around with no place to sit with the big belly for 4 hrs. So by the time I spotted the first pack that looked like a chair I made them unpack it there and then - which in itself was a 10 min negotiation. I sooooo wanted to start unpack - but was stuck to my job.
The biggest problem proved to be that we do not have a garage here and we had loads of boxes marked 'garage' that all had to go somewhere. It was not until I really thought it could not be that much that I realized that the 'apt' for garage apartment was written very unclear and hence there was lots from there in those boxes too. For the time being they all ended up in the garden.
3 hours later.......the kids eating beans and watching a cartoon. Me still watching boxes come in being so happy it was all there but so frustrated it was all just still in boxes! A little after 8 the boxes where all in and we had to beg, beg and beg them to at least put our bed together. So all of us could sleep in there.
On Thursday I had to lead a review and could not be home. So Eelco had to deal with the unpacking which is a job I want to attend and he would prefer to avoid like the plague. So despite being happy that our things had arrived we where still 2 very frustrated people on Thursday. Especially when at almost 6pm on my way home the driver told me that they where kind of halfway at best and that the packers would definitely still be there all day Friday. As you can expect from the hormonal pregnant lady I came home and did not want anything but to attack those boxes and get more out. By Friday 11am I completely understood Eelco's frustrating battle from the day before as the crew unpacked less boxes in 2 hrs then I had done alone in 4 hours the night before and took full time supervision and then still managed to get things everywhere but where we wanted them. They also clearly where not so happy dealing with the lady of the house.

But 3 frustrating days later the crew was gone, we only had 1 very small broken item - which is a miracle - and it was just us - trying to make our house here again. We are really down to the last steps of getting settled in!
By yesterday evening everyone was 'at home' - Rick eating yoghurt and watching 'Buurman and Buurman' on the PC.
Eelco and I watching the 6 nations with a nice drink and no view at any more boxes (as they where behind us or in the other rooms).
And queen Kaatje resting on the Chaise Lounge.
It will be another while still before we are all organized and unpacked, especially as Eelco will be away this week and I cannot move it all anymore, but we are at home in our Windmills Villa now. Tomorrow the new permanent Nanny starts....See if we can get a routine going before the next upheaval...baby's arrival.
