The Big Birthday Weekend Birthday Party

I origionaly had a an important work meeting in Dubai on my Birthday that I could not get out of. Meaning that despite the nice long weekend in India I would have needed to travel to Dubai on Saturday night, be there all Sunday and could be back at the earliest in the early hours of Monday. So instead of having no Birthday celebration at all we decided to make use of the free holiday on the Monday and do a big party for all of us then. Fortunately the oil company in Iraq wanted to talk to some of my colleagues this SUnday in Iraq instead and so my meeting in Dubai had to be moved.  So I had and the whole weekend at home, and we had the party organized for the only day that was nobody's actual Birthday, nicely dragging out the celebrations to the max.
We send out some invites and had not really tracked after that what happened. We thought that we had received quite some regrets from people being away for a long weekend, but we still ended up with > 40 friends and ~ 35 of their children who were available to come and celebrate with us. A very very happy chaos. Clearly nobody was enjoying themselves -;)

The kids where all over the place, upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside at the front, outside at the back, in the roof garden. The only time we had a reasonable number of at least the smaller ones together was at cake time.
There was lots and lots of singing to be done in English
 Somewhat louder in Dutch
And in Hindi by Kenneth & Richard (it may have been the Surinamese version as Kenneth is Dutch Indian Surinamese and nobody else recognized any of it -:)
Then we were back to candles
Rick was clearly happy, as usual, with a house full of people and just a lot of general merryment.
I had a lot of little coaches on how to best get started with cutting up the cake.
And a lot of quick little hands dabbing in 'needing to do some quality control'
After that it was back to more fun, giggles and laughter.
 Further fueled by Indian Whiskey.
Some of the princesses demonstrated they could make just as much noise as the adults
And then disappeared in the tree
Rick left the noisy adults and the princesses alone and went back to - cycling! Finally….we have tried to get him on that bike for a year now. -:)))
We had a fabulous afternoon we actually ended in sharing pizza dinner etc till well into the evening. By the next morning we realized we had not even opened all presents and even Duuk already had received some in preparation for his big day.

Republic day

Our Big Birthday weekend really was a big weekend because we also had the Monday off due to Indian Republic day celebrated on January 26th. (Hence Obama picked this weekend to be in India to also attend the parades etc).

There also was a small ceremony early on Monday morning at Windmills. It is about the only festivity here we found that starts sharp on time. As if there is some agreement to hoist all the flags in India at the exact same time that day (cannot find any evidence this is true or not). Kaat was not convinced when I dragged her at speed to the big field and sighed big time and said: "you always say that but we are never too late". True - almost always. But in this case,…. we where some of the few who made it on time and anyone who arrived at 8:33 had missed the flag hoisting and the anthem.
As Duuk was a little hard to get out of bed in time, Eelco and he arrived a little after us. Just like 80% of the other residents who attended. Just in time for the sweets and selfies -:)
Like everyone else we also had our picture taken with the flag (which was tiny compared to other years).
The decoration was pretty nice though!
Sleepyhead Duuk appeared to have little sentiment around Republic day of his India and was mainly interested in trailing all the cookies & sweets.
Kaat forgave me for dragging her out to the field she said as long as I would make some pictures of her as a statue. So here we are. Statue Kaat with Jacket on (almost impossible to achieve! - it was damp and chilly still that time of the day), in Birthday dress and with India sticker.
My friend who lives in the apartment complex that is part of the same complex watched the ceremony from her balcony and took this fun shot. Our villa is in the 3rd / back row, but outside of this view, another 2 buildings to the right.
After 15-20 minutes the whole event was stretched out as long as it could and everyone went home again. Good reason for us to get up this early as we had a big party to prepare!

Maartje 38

The 3rd event of the Big Birthday Weekend was mine. My birthday on Sunday. I was treated to a lovely breakfast in bed with presents. Followed by a hurried getting ready for touch rugby where I consumed my actual birthday breakfast at the side of the pitch with neighbors & friends.

After Rugby we met up with a large group of friends at the local hotel for a very extended Brunch, and since we had the whole monday off too due to republic day it was a very very nice & relaxing day.

After all the morning's excitement and refusing to nap on Kaat's Brithday, Duuk crashed at the brunch and slept there and then. So he missed the singing and the cake, but he did not care at all as there was plenty of other stuff for him to consume!
No pictures of the breakfast or me with a sleepy head opening presents. This is however what the cute & cuddly delivery team looked like! The piece of art of a Rajastani Balcony on the cupboard in the background is one of my presents. it is cut out of paper and sits a little away from the background so there is some nice shadow play also.

Kaat 4

On the Saturday of our big birthday weekend we were celebrating Kaat's 4th.
We got Kaat some chocolate muffins to start the day with. She likes these so much that she wanted to actually finish one first before opening any presents. We managed to stretch it to halfway through the present opening, as at that stage Duuk had already polished off one.
Kaat was also the only one this weekend who got to open her own presents. She actually was pretty good with letting Rick pick the order of the presents and letting Duuk help some later on.
Thanks Omarijke for my bath robe
And thanks Opa Sjoerd & Oma Joke for my dresses. They twirl very well and fit well with my always black feet -:)
As Kaat recently moved in with Duuk (she was staying with Rick before), we got her some pink elephant stuff to liven up her half of Duuk's elephant room.
 India style
Unfortunately, the big present we got for Kaat, a bike, was still locked in the drivers room as we had forgotten to ask him to leave it out. Kaat was none the wiser and happy to play with the game she got.
After the presents Kaat and I first went to get our nails done. Kaat loves that and has all the patience in the world to sit and be pampered for 45 minutes.
We enjoyed our girl time together

After the nail salon we did get Kaat her new bike. No pictures of the moment she got it, but it was very well received and Kaat was quick on the learning curve, enthusing in the process her brothers.

We wrapped up the veining with princess movie time at our house for Kaat and a few kids from around the block, and Rick modeled Kaat's other new dress. He enjoyed testing what he would look like as a girl, but we both concluded just a dress does not do the trick to find out what Rick would have looked like if he would have been a girl.
The cycling bug stuck and all weekend the kids have been on their bikes:

The big birthday weekend

The past weekend we had the big family birthday weekend. We started on Friday evening with Eelco, giving him, somewhat belated, his birthday presents, as we had provided none on the actual day in Bangkok (we did have a celebration there though).

The theme of the weekend had started:
1. Unwrapping your own presents is overrated
2. Duuk would learn how to sing happy birthday in 3 languages
3. Blowing out birthday candles is the best thing ever
4. Glad we imported enough wrapping paper

Duuk's first day of school

Although Duuk is not quite two yet, we agreed with school sort off that Duuk could start after the xmas holidays as it provided a more natural starting point. Late yesterday we realized we had never confirmed this and texted the nursery teacher and the head of school to check. This morning was also the only morning in the next week or more one of us could move stuff around at work to take him actually to school. Fortunately we got two happy text messages back, so I scrambled some stuff together….What a difference. With Rick and Kaat the preparations where much much more thorough!

The only one who was very emotional about it all? - Me! Well actually, also Chandramma and Sarala who will now have a lot less time to sound with Duuk
Rick and Kaat where very excited Duuk was now also coming to their school
With all the extra supplies of a first day Duuk did not yet get to carry his own pack up the drive
But he did get good support
All the way into his classroom
Duuk immediately just picked a seat at the table and started playing -:)
He also was clearly very pleased with the toy car collection
Not yet so much with any of the other kids that showed up
Rick and Kaat know very well what super things Ms Joya's class has on offer and where pointing out all the amenities
So when it became utterly apparent that for Duuk the first day of school was nothing special. Eelco left.
Both Kaat and Rick checked up on little bro during the day and so did we with Ms Joya. But he had just 'slipped in'. No tears, no questioning faces, no uncertainty. All normal! When we asked him tonight whether he wanted to go to school again tomorrow to Ms Joya he said 'Yes'. Loud and clear. No idea he understood the question. But as I understood from Anbu, with the love they have at school for our other kids, the fact that we now are the only ones with 3 kids in that school (unlikely considering they only cater for age 2-6), the whole staff was immediately into Duuk as well and at least half of them came to see him off and make sure Anbu could manage with all 3 kids.

Leaves just me and the ladies in shambles about little boys growing up too fast!

Incredible India - the way things work - 'pyramid schemes' and 'gas testing blowing out of control'

So we had a few major issues at and around the house before the xmas holidays. Every 3 months or so we need to have some kind of staff meeting anyway as things start to loosen up more and more in the wrong direction, but this time it went a bit beyond the normal 'tightening the reigns'.

First we had an issue that was caused by the owners / management of our compound (TE). They decided to do some gas testing. We have a centralized system, not very fancy, it just means there is somewhere a central batch of gas cylinders and we all are supplied through gas lines from that battery.

TE had planned to test the system and had informed us that gas supply would be disrupted for a while on a certain day. No further details provided. A similar message followed for the next few days. So Sarala, who also cooks for us, just like any other day that week, would try on occasion of the gas was back on, and then start cooking. Midway through her cooking session, with Duuk playing around in the kitchen, huge flames came up from the stove. Sarala closed the knobs and ran outside with Duuk, where she yelled for help and waited - Nobody responded. Sarala does not dare to call us during office hours (so test we need to talk about that), and cannot really read or write, so she got her freidn who works with our neighbors to send us a still completely incomprehensible text message.
(We think it says: "Sorry to disturb you, gas problem, kit is fire suddenly, then I had to stop cooking, the maintenance people are here now, if you are free call me please")
Anbu fortunately came home shortly after. Checked the house and retrieved the fire extinguisher and the kids played outside till we got home.

Turns out:
  •  TE was executing pressure tests on the gas lines in our row of Villa's and should have send us all a message saying - DO NOT USE THE GASE BETWEEN X AND Y HOURS - instead of only saying there would be no supply
  • In two other house sin our row people where also cooking, however in that case it was a white Australian Lady and a quite vocal Indian male - so they got attention from TE but Sarala was ignored
  • Our neighbor across had a hissing sound outside the house and this was checked over by TE, Sarala was still standing outside the house with Duuk at the time but was ignored.
  • Our Asian (Japanese)Neighbor, stuck her head out of the door, and asked the passing TE guys what was up and they said 'nothing'. She started cooking 1 hr later, and as the pressure was still on the lines also had huge flames and singed her hair and eyebrows and also had he little baby next to the stove.
  • This whole event happened Thursday 3pm, we only had pieced together more or less the story by early Friday.
  • No apologies, explanations, no house calls from TE followed.
  • By Saturday morning Eelco was furious and on the phone again. He was told nothing else was done as 'nobody complained'?!?!?!
  • The other neighbors in our row who had no incidents, where never warned to be careful when starting to use the stove
  • And after 24 hrs of nagging and calls from severe of us we got a long and winded e-mail - with no real explanation, no apology, lots of excuses and a tone off - well nobody died so what?
  • By now one of the owners of the houses, not TE, has organized a meeting with the gas company who did the testing.
Irony of it all? That same weekend TE organized a carpet sale in our club house, which they are not allowed to do - use it for commercial purposes for their benefit without the residents agreement - which they managed to advertise through flyers, 3 different e-mail lists, and personal door to door visits and billboards at all central locations……. Shows how much personal safety matters here!

So a whole talk with Sarala on safety, the use of the fire blanket, calling us and communicating better in case of emergency followed. Fortunately these people are used to the scariest cooking sets ups in their houses and so are pretty well equipped to deal with those. They learned the hard way!

The Pyramid scheme.

Early December I come home to a Sarala in tears. She clear had been upset a while already, but with so many family problems I don't always want to ask. She starts telling me that she lend money to our drivers wife, a year ago (the drivers wife works at my friend's house also at the compound). The amount was substantial (~ 3 months salary), and the wife had asked not to tell our driver as she was using it to help out her sister or family, which he had refused to do. Turns out Sarala's husband had decided lending money would be good to make some quick money by charging a lot of interest.

Of course, he is piss poor at managing money himself, and hence had spend the money twice already in no time, leading Sarala to lend the money from neighbors to fill the gap - whom I understand are some sort of loan sharks.

The wife paid a few months, then had some other me regencies and could not pay again or not enough and now a year later less then half was paid off and Sarala's neighbors where threatening and wanted their 20% interest and Sarala's husband threatened Sarala and told her to solve the problem and suggested he wanted to go to the house where the wife works and confront the madam (my friend and neighbor). The husband also is an alcoholic and hence not the nicest to deal with.

So, instead of a  nice catch-up lunch with my friend, we ended up in the midst of it. As our staff is alone with the kids all day I was worried this would be fought out over my kids heads and these ladies have no way to effectively deal with their husbands. Our driver is great as a driver, but once he found out he was definitely not supportive of his wife and in general he could improve on the supportive husband front, so…we could have tried to stay out. But with kids involved and dumb husbands…. Of course the wiser route would be to fire them, not deal with the issue and move on. Both my friend and I have still enough naivety or faith in the good of people that we wanted to try and fix things somehow.

It took a good few iterations to get some idea of what happened. Also the stories from the 2 ladies where far from the same. We had to tell security to stop letting Sarala's husband in and we had to calm down our driver also some to make it clear he would be in trouble if we found out any of this was fight out with our kids present. It was clear the ladies both where very scared for their jobs and what we would do once the story was out.

AT first we tried to get the ladies to get to an agreement together and then tell us jointly - with all 4 of us women present - that they were all ok with what was agreed. Of course that did not work - it just ended in monologues about 'don't worry about it we are sorry we said something' to 'this is just how it works in India' to 'I swear on my kid, the church and whatever'. In the end after 2 weeks of shenanigans we met with the ladies and had a mediation - it was not even hostile at all - both ladies where clearly scared and desperate. We told them who had to pay what, helped them with the amounts,  withheld xmas bonuses and presents and made sure the amount due (with an appropriate interest not silly) to Sarala's neighbors which they confirmed back to me. Then followed a careful hinting to our driver that it was time to go sleep at home again and that things where sorted and done now - but never again - or termination is to follow. We also found out in the process that Sarala had caved to her husband and had provided her bank pas sot her 'woman only' account to her husband. After all that I have at least for now given up on my plans to help Sarala with her financial planning for her old age (which is imminent). If she caved to him every time - there is no sense.

We will see how long this lasts and if we scared them enough or not to better their lives - all 3 of them.

Safe to say that after all this we were extra ready for a holiday.
