US$1000

A report today in the news informed us that 64% of Americans would not have US$ 1000 readily available for an emergency (not even on a credit card). It may sound like a lot 1000. and yes it is if you think of all the 1 USD deals at the fastfood chains. But to put it into perspective - as an emergency fund it will not get you very far here. Today we were at the pediatrician and due to some admin errors my benefits have been cancelled instead of reinstated when I came back from maternity leave. Hence we needed to pick up the tab for the check-ups for both kids ourselves. For 2x 10 minutes with the Doctor and a few vaccinations each the total visit costed us just under $1000 ! Imagine what it would cost if your kid is actually sick...
